Apple's Mail app works with FiniteHost as an IMAP account. This guide covers the iPhone and iPad first, then the Mac. It adds priya@acme.in. Menu names below match recent versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS; older versions use the same fields in slightly different places.

Before you start#

  • The mailbox exists and you have its password (Email accounts). On a phone, copy it to the clipboard or keep your password manager open.
  • Keep these values ready:

iPhone and iPad#

Add the account#

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account. (On older iOS: Settings → Mail → Accounts → Add Account.)
  2. Tap Other → Add Mail Account.
  3. Enter Name (shown to people you write to, e.g. "Priya Sharma"), Email priya@acme.in, Password, and a Description (e.g. "Acme"). Tap Next.
  4. At the top, choose IMAP (not POP).
  5. Under Incoming Mail Server: Host Name mail.finitehost.com, User Name priya@acme.in, Password the mailbox password.
  6. Under Outgoing Mail Server: Host Name mail.finitehost.com, User Name priya@acme.in, Password the same password.
  7. Tap Next. The phone checks the account (this can take up to a minute).
  8. Make sure Mail is switched on and tap Save.

Check the security and port settings#

iOS usually picks the right settings, but check them once:

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → the account → Account.
  2. Tap Advanced (at the bottom). Under Incoming Settings: Use SSL on, Authentication Password, Server Port 993. Go back.
  3. Tap SMTP → the primary server mail.finitehost.com. Check: Use SSL on, Authentication Password, Server Port 587 (or 465). Tap Done.

On port 587, iOS's "Use SSL" switch means STARTTLS, which is what FiniteHost expects.

Folder behaviour#

In Account → Advanced → Mailbox Behaviors, check that Drafts, Sent, Deleted and Archive point to the server folders (Drafts, Sent, Trash, Archive). That keeps every device in step.

Mac#

Add the account#

  1. Open Mail. Choose Mail → Add Account.
  2. Select Other Mail Account and click Continue.
  3. Enter Name, Email Address priya@acme.in and Password. Click Sign In.
  4. Mail says it is "Unable to verify account name or password" and shows more fields. This is expected. Fill in:
  • User Name priya@acme.in
  • Account Type IMAP
  • Incoming Mail Server mail.finitehost.com
  • Outgoing Mail Server mail.finitehost.com
  1. Click Sign In. Choose the apps to use with the account (at least Mail) and click Done.

Check the ports#

  1. Open Mail → Settings (or Preferences) → Accounts → select the account → Server Settings.
  2. Incoming Mail Server: untick Automatically manage connection settings and set Port 993 with Use TLS/SSL ticked, Authentication Password.
  3. Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): untick Automatically manage connection settings, set Port 587 with Use TLS/SSL ticked, Authentication Password, and enter the user name and password.
  4. Click Save.

Check that it works#

  1. Send a test message from the new account to another address you own.
  2. Open webmail and look in Sent: the message should be there.
  3. Reply from the other address and watch the reply arrive.

Troubleshooting#

ProblemFix
"Cannot Verify Server Identity"The host name is not mail.finitehost.com. Correct it. Do not tap "Continue" or "Trust" on a certificate warning.
"The user name or password is incorrect"Use the full address as User Name in both incoming and outgoing. Paste the password.
"Cannot Send Mail" / "The sender address was rejected"Fill the outgoing User Name and Password. Check port 587 (or 465) with SSL on.
Sent messages do not appear on other devicesSet Mailbox Behaviors (iPhone) so Sent Mailbox is the server's Sent folder. On a Mac: Mail → Settings → Accounts → Mailbox Behaviors.
Mail only arrives when the app is openediOS fetches IMAP mail on a schedule. Go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data and pick a shorter interval, or set the account to Fetch.
Password changed in the panel and now nothing worksUpdate the password in both the incoming and the SMTP server settings.
