Set up email in the Gmail app (Android)
Add a FiniteHost mailbox to the Gmail app on Android as an "Other" IMAP account, step by step.
On this page
The Gmail app on Android can read and send mail for any IMAP account, not only Gmail addresses. Your FiniteHost mail stays on the FiniteHost server; the app connects to it directly. This guide adds priya@acme.in.
Before you start#
- The mailbox exists and you have its password (Email accounts). Copy it to your phone's clipboard or password manager, so you can paste it.
- The Gmail app is installed and up to date (Play Store).
- Keep these values ready:
Add the account#
- Open the Gmail app.
- Tap your profile picture (top right) → Add another account.
- Choose Other.
- Type
priya@acme.inand tap Manual setup. (If you tap Next instead, the app tries to detect settings; that does not work for FiniteHost addresses, so use manual setup.) - Choose Personal (IMAP).
- Paste the mailbox password and tap Next.
- Incoming server settings: set Username to
priya@acme.in(the full address, not justpriya), keep the Password that is already filled in, set Server tomail.finitehost.com, Port to993and Security type to SSL/TLS. Tap Next; the app checks the settings. - Outgoing server settings: keep Require sign-in on, set Username to
priya@acme.inwith the same Password, SMTP server tomail.finitehost.com, Port to587and Security type to STARTTLS (or port465with SSL/TLS). Tap Next. - Account options: choose how often to sync (every 15 minutes is a good start), whether to notify you of new mail, and whether to sync this account. Tap Next.
- Account name (only you see it, e.g. "Acme") and Your name (shown to people you write to, e.g. "Priya Sharma"). Tap Next.
The account appears in the account switcher under your profile picture. Switch to it to see its Inbox.
Check that it works#
- Switch to the new account and send a message to another address you own.
- Open webmail at
webmail.finitehost.comand check the Sent folder: the message is there. - Reply from the other address. The reply should appear on the phone within the sync interval you chose; pull down on the inbox to check now.
Change settings later#
Open Gmail → menu (☰) → Settings → tap the account address. Here you can change the sync frequency, notifications and signature. Server settings (including the password) are under Incoming settings and Outgoing settings.
When you make a new mailbox password in the panel, update it in both Incoming and Outgoing settings.
Troubleshooting#
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| "Username or password is incorrect" | Use the full address as Username. Paste the password; Android keyboards sometimes add a space or capital letter. |
| "Can't connect to server" | Check server mail.finitehost.com and port 993 with SSL/TLS. Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. |
| The app warns about a certificate | The server name is wrong (for example your own domain). Use mail.finitehost.com. |
| Receiving works, sending fails | In Outgoing settings, turn Require sign-in on and check port 587 + STARTTLS or 465 + SSL/TLS. |
| New mail arrives late | IMAP accounts in the Gmail app check on a schedule. Choose a shorter sync interval, or use webmail notifications (Webmail on your phone). |
| Messages vanish from the phone | They were deleted or moved on another device. IMAP keeps every device the same. Look in Trash or Archive in webmail. |
