Set up email in Outlook
Add a FiniteHost mailbox to classic Outlook for Windows, the new Outlook for Windows, and Outlook for Mac, step by step.
On this page
This guide adds priya@acme.in to Microsoft Outlook as an IMAP account. There are three Outlook versions in use today; follow the section for yours. If you are not sure which you have: the new Outlook for Windows has a New Outlook toggle at the top right and no File menu, classic Outlook has a File menu, and Outlook for Mac runs on a Mac.
Before you start#
- The mailbox exists and you have its password (Email accounts).
- Keep these values ready:
Classic Outlook for Windows (Microsoft 365, 2021, 2019, 2016)#
- Open Outlook and click File → Add Account.
- Type the full address,
priya@acme.in. - Click Advanced options and tick Let me set up my account manually. Click Connect.
- Choose IMAP.
- Fill in Incoming mail: Server
mail.finitehost.com, Port993, Encryption method SSL/TLS. Leave "Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" unticked. - Fill in Outgoing mail: Server
mail.finitehost.com, Port587, Encryption method STARTTLS. Leave SPA unticked. - Click Next. Enter the mailbox password and click Connect.
- When Outlook says the account was added, click Done.
If Outlook later asks for a password for the outgoing server, open File → Account Settings → Account Settings, double-click the account, click More Settings → Outgoing Server, and tick My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication with Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
Check the folders#
Classic Outlook can create its own "Sent Items" and "Deleted Items" folders. To keep sent mail visible on every device:
- File → Account Settings → Account Settings → select the account → Change → More Settings.
- On Advanced (or Sent Items / Deleted Items tabs in some versions), choose to save sent items in the server's Sent folder and mark deleted items to move to Trash.
New Outlook for Windows#
- Open Outlook and go to Settings (gear icon) → Accounts → Email accounts → Add account.
- Type
priya@acme.inand click Continue. - If Outlook suggests a provider, choose a different account type and select IMAP.
- Open Show more / Advanced settings if the server fields are hidden, and fill in:
- IMAP incoming server
mail.finitehost.com, Port993, Secure connection type SSL/TLS. - SMTP user name
priya@acme.in, SMTP password the same password. - SMTP outgoing server
mail.finitehost.com, Port587, Secure connection type STARTTLS.
- Enter the IMAP password and click Continue. Outlook tests the settings and adds the account.
Outlook for Mac#
- Open Outlook and choose Outlook → Settings → Accounts.
- Click + → New Account.
- Type
priya@acme.inand click Continue. - If Outlook asks which provider, choose IMAP/POP (sometimes under Choose the provider).
- Set Type to IMAP and fill in:
- User name
priya@acme.inand the password. - Incoming server
mail.finitehost.com, port993, tick Use SSL to connect. - Outgoing server
mail.finitehost.com, port587, tick Use SSL to connect.
- Click Add Account, then Done.
Check that it works#
- Send a test message from Outlook to another address you own. It should arrive within a minute.
- Look in webmail's Sent folder: the same message should be there. That confirms Outlook saves sent mail on the server.
- Reply to it from the other address and watch it arrive in Outlook.
Troubleshooting#
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Outlook keeps asking for the password | Re-enter the password in the account settings. Make sure the user name is the full address. If you recently made a new password in the panel, update it here. |
| "We couldn't find the server" or it tries Exchange | Start again and choose IMAP manually; do not let Outlook detect the account. |
Certificate warning mentioning mail.acme.in | You typed your own domain as the server. Change both servers to mail.finitehost.com. |
| Sending fails, receiving works | Outgoing server requires authentication is off, or the port and encryption do not match. Use 587 + STARTTLS, or 465 + SSL/TLS. |
| Sent mail missing on the phone | Outlook saves sent mail in a local folder. Point it at the server's Sent folder (see "Check the folders"). |
| Error 0x800CCC0E or 0x800CCC0F | Outlook cannot reach the server. Check the port numbers, then try another network. Some office firewalls block mail ports. |
