Files & SFTP

Use the File manager

The File manager lets you work with your website and app files straight from the panel, in your web browser. You can upload files, fix a line in a page, unzip a theme or download a copy, without installing anything. For very large files or big uploads, use SFTP instead.

Before you start#

  • You need a web hosting or Python compute plan. Mail-only plans have no file storage.
  • Sign in to the control panel.
  • It helps to know where things live: see Folder layout.

Open the File manager#

  1. Open File manager. In the panel menu, under Data & files, choose File manager.
  2. Start from Home. You see your top folders: sites/ (your websites), apps/ (your Python apps) and restores/ (files you restore from a backup).
  3. Click a folder to open it. For example open sites, then acme.in, then public.
  4. Use the breadcrumb to go back. The path at the top shows where you are; click any part of it to jump back up.

Everything you do here runs as your own account user, the same as SFTP.

Create and upload#

  • New folder and New file create an empty folder or file in the folder you are in.
  • Upload sends files from your computer. You can pick several files at once, up to 20 MB each. For bigger files, use SFTP.
  • Uploading a .zip asks whether to unzip it into the folder. Say yes to unpack a website, a theme or a plugin in one go.

Work with a file or folder#

Each item in the list has its own buttons:

ButtonWhat it does
EditOpens a text file in the browser so you can change it and save. Works for text files up to 2 MB, such as .php, .html, .css, .js, .json, .txt, .md, .xml, .svg, .yml, .ini, .htaccess, .env, .py, .csv, .sql and .log.
DownloadSaves a file (up to 20 MB) to your computer. A folder downloads as a .zip, up to 20 MB.
ExtractUnpacks a .zip, .tar or .tar.gz archive into the folder it is in.
RenameChanges the name. To move an item, type a new path from Home, for example sites/acme.in/public/old/logo.png.
PermissionsSets who can read and write it, for example 644 for files and 755 for folders.

About permissions#

  • 644 for files and 755 for folders suit almost every website.
  • Settings that let everyone write (world-writable, such as 777) are not allowed.
  • 600 makes a file private to your account: the web server can no longer read it, so it cannot be opened from the web.

Several items at once#

  1. Tick the items you want, using the boxes in the list.
  2. Choose Compress to pack them into one .zip in the same folder, or Delete to remove them.

What you cannot change here#

To keep your sites working, the File manager will not delete or move:

  • the top folders (sites, apps, restores);
  • a website's own folder, such as sites/acme.in;
  • a website's public folder.

To remove a website, use Websites in the panel instead; see Add a website.

Troubleshooting#

  • The upload is refused as too large: the file is over 20 MB. Upload it with SFTP.
  • Edit is not offered for a file: it is not a text file, or it is over 2 MB. Download it, change it on your computer and upload it again.
  • A page shows 403 after changing permissions: you probably set 600 on it. Set files back to 644 and folders to 755.
  • The site still shows the old version: your browser or the CDN may have the old copy. See CDN and caching.
