phpMyAdmin is a well-known tool for working with MySQL and MariaDB databases in a web browser. On FiniteHost it runs at https://db.finitehost.site. Use it to look inside your tables, fix a value, run an SQL query, or import and export a whole database.

Before you start#

  • You need a database: see Create and connect to a database.
  • Have the database's user name and password ready. The user name is the same as the database name, for example t3d2ca2b860_wordpress. The password was shown once when you made the database.
  • Lost the password? Make a new one under Databases with New password. If a website uses the database, put the new password in its settings too (for WordPress, the DB_PASSWORD line in wp-config.php).

  1. Open phpMyAdmin. In the panel menu, under Data & files, choose phpMyAdmin, or press the phpMyAdmin button on the Databases page. It opens https://db.finitehost.site.
  2. Enter the user name, which is the database name, for example t3d2ca2b860_wordpress.
  3. Enter the database's password.
  4. Sign in. Your database appears in the list on the left.

You sign in to one database at a time, with that database's own user name and password.

Browse and change data#

  1. Click the database on the left, then a table.
  2. Browse shows the rows. Use Edit on a row to change a value, and Go to save.
  3. Search finds rows that match a value.

Run an SQL query#

  1. Click the database, then the SQL tab.
  2. Type the query, for example SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_posts;.
  3. Press Go.

Export a database#

  1. Click the database, then the Export tab.
  2. Choose Quick and the SQL format.
  3. Press Export and save the .sql file on your computer.

Import a database#

  1. Click the database, then the Import tab.
  2. Choose the file, for example a .sql or compressed .sql.gz file exported from your old host.
  3. Press Import (or Go) and wait for the success message.

The Import page shows the largest file it accepts. Compress the file to .sql.gz to make it smaller. For a database that is still too big, see Import and export a database.

Troubleshooting#

  • "Access denied" when signing in: the user name must include your subscription ID, exactly as on the Databases page. If unsure of the password, make a new one with New password.
  • The import stops with a collation error such as utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci: the file came from MySQL 8. Replace utf8mb4_0900_ai_ci with utf8mb4_unicode_ci in the file and import again.
  • "command denied" during an import: the databases reached the plan's size limit and became read-only. See Database limits and passwords.
  • More fixes: Database problems.
